Following shots being fired at former President Donald Trump on Saturday, the Biden-Harris campaign is “pausing all outbound communications and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible,” a campaign official told media outlets on Saturday.

The move to suspend political communications is common following a significant event like what happened at the Republican candidate’s event, where he was apparently grazed by a bullet.

The president shared both a statement and made public remarks Saturday evening. He and numerous other members of both parties have spoken out to wish Trump the best and to decry political violence.

One member of the crowd was killed, as was the shooter. Another audience member remains in critical condition.

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country,” Trump said on Truth Social in his first statement on the incident. “Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”

“NCIS: Origins” enlisted “SNL” alum Bobby Moynihan and “Orange is the New Black” star Lori Petty in recurring roles, coshowrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal revealed Saturday.

Moynihan boards the “NCIS” prequel series as Woodrow “Woody” Browne, head of the NIS Forensic Lab, while Petty plays Dr. Lenora Friedman, an assistant medical examiner. North and Monreal announced the news during the Television Critics’ Association’s summer press tour.

North promised Moynihan would bring some comedy to the CBS procedural, saying “we’ve done one scene with Bobby so far and hysterical is an understatement.”

“NCIS: Origins,” which is currently a week into production, stars Austin Stowell as a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Taking place beginning in 1991, the show follows Gibbs as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, according to the official logline.

The show’s ensemble cast also includes Mariel Molino as Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez, Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks, Tyla Abercrumbie as Mary Jo Hayes, Diany Rodriguez as Vera Strickland and Caleb Foote as Bernard “Randy” Randolf.

Mark Harmon will narrate and executive produce the series alongside his son, Sean Harmon, alongside North and Monreal. North and Monreal cowrote the premiere episode and serve as coshowrunners, reuniting after serving as writers on “NCIS” for 10 years.

In addition to “SNL,” Moynihan is largely known for his voice acting, with roles in “Inside Out 2,” “IF,” “Monsters at Work,” “Nature Cat” and “Krapopolis.” He can also be seen in “Unfrosted,” “Party Down” and “Blockbuster.”

Petty is best known for her roles in “Tank Girl,” “Free Willy,” “A League of Their Own” and “Point Break,” and has also appeared in “Station Eleven,” “Obliterated” and “Orange Is the New Black.”

“NCIS: Origins” will debut Monday, Oct. 14 from 9-11 p.m. on CBS before moving to its regular 10-11 p.m. timeslot on Monday, Oct. 21.

Biden Sets BET Interview Special ‘Black America Votes’ https://www.thewrap.com/biden-bet-interview-special-black-vote/ https://www.thewrap.com/biden-bet-interview-special-black-vote/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 20:02:05 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7580172 The July 17 exclusive comes as the president continues to target Black voters

The post Biden Sets BET Interview Special ‘Black America Votes’ appeared first on TheWrap.

President Joe Biden will sit with BET in an exclusive interview special titled “Black America Votes” on Wednesday, the network announced Saturday.

“Black America Votes: The Biden Special” will premiere on the network at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT. Biden will be interviewed by the award-winning journalist Ed Gordon, marking his first on-camera interview on the channel.

“The conversation will focus on critical issues impacting our community and discuss why Black Americans should continue to support his candidacy amidst growing public concerns and calls for him to withdraw,” the network said in a statement.

The half-our interview also promises to address “the growing concern over President Biden’s fitness for office, the state of the economy for Black families, the Project 2025 conservative policy agenda, and the fight to engage Black voters.”

“Black America Votes: The Biden Special” is produced by Jason Samuels and is a complement to BET’s “We V.O.T.E.” campaign.

The special will land two days after Biden’s on-camera interview with NBC on Monday, which itself followed his sit-down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on July 5. Following Biden’s performance in that interview, Stephanopoulos told an inquirer on the streets of New York City that he doesn’t think the president can serve another four years.

The string of television engagements — including a high-profile press conference at NATO on Thursday — all came in the aftermath of the president’s dismal turn against former President Donald Trump in CNN’s live debate last month. Calls for Biden to step down from the Democratic ticket have mounted as concerns over his age and fitness for office escalates to an all-time high.

The Black vote helped push Biden over the finish line in 2020 against Trump, and his exclusive interview with BET is certainly the campaign’s latest effort to drum up support from those same voters once again.

‘Tracker’ Season 2: Jensen Ackles to Return for More Than 1 Episode https://www.thewrap.com/tracker-jensen-ackles-season-2-return/ https://www.thewrap.com/tracker-jensen-ackles-season-2-return/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 17:30:51 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7580082 The "Supernatural" alum plays the brother of Justin Hartley's Colter Shaw

The post ‘Tracker’ Season 2: Jensen Ackles to Return for More Than 1 Episode appeared first on TheWrap.

Good news “Tracker” fans, Jensen Ackles will return for Season 2.

After the CBS procedural series introduced the “Supernatural” star during the inaugural season, Ackles is set to return for Season 2 for more than one episode, star and EP Justin Hartley and showrunner Elwood Reid revealed during the Television Critics’ Association’s summer press tour.

“We got him, he’s coming back,” Hartley told journalists on Saturday during the CBS drama’s presentation. “We’re having fun with that, it’s a great story.”

The news comes after fan speculation that Ackles, who plays the estranged brother of Hartley’s Colter Shaw, might not be able to return for another installment of “Tracker” amid his casting in Prime Video’s thriller series “Countdown.”

Elwood, who also serves as an EP on the series, confirmed Ackles would appear in more than one episode. While the producers are keeping the upcoming storyline under wraps until the Season 2 premiere this fall, Elwood said he was “particularly excited” about the plot to come.

“I’ve worked with Jensen previously and Justin’s friends with him,” Elwood said, referencing his time as showrunner on ABC’s “Big Sky.” “It’s like family — when we text him [he says], ‘tell me where and tell me when,’ and he shows up. He’s just that kind of guy.”

Ahead of the Season 2 debut of “Tracker” on Sunday, Oct. 27, Elwood teased the forthcoming installment will include some “surprises.”

“This season is going to be … even better [and] more fun,” Elwood said. “We’ve got some big surprises coming up this season, I know everyone says that but we truly do.”

In Prime Video’s “Countdown,” Ackles stars as LAPD officer Mark Meachum, who is recruited to join a secret task force of undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement to investigate a suspicious murder committed in broad daylight.

‘Rust’ Prosecutor Who Quit Says Undisclosed Bullets Led to Her Decision: ‘Something Went Horribly Wrong Here’ | Video https://www.thewrap.com/rust-prosecutor-quit-bullets-alec-baldwin/ https://www.thewrap.com/rust-prosecutor-quit-bullets-alec-baldwin/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 16:47:13 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7580040 The central mystery of the case remains: how did live bullets get on to the set?

The post ‘Rust’ Prosecutor Who Quit Says Undisclosed Bullets Led to Her Decision: ‘Something Went Horribly Wrong Here’ | Video appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
The prosecutor in the “Rust” case against Alec Baldwin said she quit the case moments before the judge dismissed it because she was unaware until Friday that there was live ammunition relevant to the case that had not been turned over to the defense.

“Something went horribly wrong here,” prosecutor Erlinda Ocampo Johnson said, interviewed by NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Friday night. “My ethical obligations were that I advocate for dismissal.”

Baldwin’s trial for manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was dismissed Friday after it emerged that police and prosecutors deliberately withheld evidence of live bullets from the defense team.

Johnson said she learned for the first time during defense testimony on Thursday that there were live bullets that had not been turned over to the defense. She had previously been prepared to prosecute Baldwin, because she believed there had been “some recklessness” with guns on the set.

She said that Baldwin engaged in “horseplay” on the set, pointing a gun at a person on set to shoot blanks, adding that should not have happened. Nonetheless, that did not explain the presence of live ammunition, normally prohibited by strict production rules.

On Friday morning, Johnson saw the live bullets when they were brought into court for the judge to examine — “three rounds that looked very similar to live rounds found on the set of ‘Rust,'” Johnson said. She was shocked.

“Those three rounds do become potentially exculpatory,” she said, underlining that they should have been provided to the defense.

Over the lunch break post-testimony, she said, Johnson argued to the prosecution team to drop the case. Her argument was rejected by the lead prosecutor, Kari Morrissey. Morrissey had already argued in court that she and the prosecutors had made a determination that the bullets didn’t match the live round that killed Hutchins and therefore had “no evidentiary value.”

Johnson disagreed, choosing to resign from the prosecution. Shortly after, the judge dismissed the case: “The state’s discovery violation has injected a needless incurable delay into the jury trial. Dismissal with prejudice is warranted to ensure the integrity of the judicial system and the efficient administration of justice,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said.

The central mystery to the case remains, which is: how did live bullets get on to the set?

In defense testimony on Thursday, it emerged that investigators had been provided in March with several live bullets by Troy Teske, a retired Arizona police officer. Teske told them they matched the bullet that killed Hutchins. Teske was a longtime friend of the father of armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was sentenced to 18 months for involuntary manslaughter.

That mystery remains unsolved, but with the judge dismissing the case with prejudice, Baldwin cannot be retried. However, he could still face the dismissal being appealed.

Sharon Waxman contributed to this story.

‘Euphoria’ Cast and Character Guide | Photos https://www.thewrap.com/euphoria-cast-and-character-guide/ https://www.thewrap.com/euphoria-cast-and-character-guide/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7579377 Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi are set to return to the show's third season with several blockbusters under their belts

The post ‘Euphoria’ Cast and Character Guide | Photos appeared first on TheWrap.

The long-awaited — and highly speculated — return of “Euphoria” is here. And the stars it created have not left the series behind just yet.

HBO announced Friday that the series will kick off production for the new season in January 2025, and all main cast members are expected to return. The Emmy Award-winning series delayed production in March, giving the series’ stars opportunity to pursue other projects.

Many of the show’s regulars have blossomed into Hollywood’s young elite. Zendaya has already had a huge year with “Dune: Part Two” and “Challengers” premiering just a few weeks apart. Sydney Sweeney has skyrocketed as a producer and actress with her box office hit “Anyone But You” horror flick “Immaculate.” And Jacob Elordi has transitioned from teenage heartthrob to leading man in his recent projects “Saltburn” and “Priscilla.”

Not all of the cast will return, though. Barbie Ferreira announced in 2022 that she would be exiting the show, and singer Dominc Fike said he was unsure if his character, Elliot, would return for a new season. Fezco’s storyline will also come to a sudden close, following actor Angus Cloud’s unexpected death last year.

For more on what the “Euphoria” stars have been up to since Season 2, keep reading.

Zendaya’s star turn as Rue in the HBO drama skyrocketed her career to new heights. Since her Emmy-winning performance as the teenage drug addict, Zendaya has gone on to lead many film projects, including two blockbusters just this year with “Challengers” and “Dune: Part Two.” She executive produced the second season of the series in 2020 and is expected to return to that role with Season 3.

Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs

Elordi plays Nate Jacobs, the star high school football player with a complicated life back home. The star’s overbearing presence is captivating to watch on screen and his character plays a pivotal role in a love triangle in Season 2. Elordi transfixed audiences in “Saltburn” and took the reins from Austin Butler as Elvis in “Priscilla.”

Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard

After booking “White Lotus” following her first season on “Euphoria,” Sweeney has only continued to tie herself to buzzy screen projects. She executive produced and starred in “Anyone But You” last fall, breaking box-office records with the rom-com grossing over $200 million. Sweeney also starred in the not-so-successful “Madame Web” and her divine thriller “Immaculate.” Sweeney will reprise her Emmy-nominated role as Cassie Howard.

Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn

Schafer made her acting debut as Jules in the HBO drama series. Jules has long been a personal role for the actress, who is also a transgender woman — so much so that she wrote a Jules-centric episode. Since her success on the show, Schafer has gone on to star and critical and commercial successes like “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness.”

Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez

Demie plays the feisty Maddy Perez, best friend of Cassie and on-and-off girlfriend of Nate, in “Euphoria.” Her other film credits prior to her role in “Euphoria” include the coming-of-age film “Mid90s” and the drama “Waves.” Since the show, Demie has not been as active in Hollywood, other than a short cameo in “The Idol.”

Colman Domingo as Ali

Colman Domingo (Credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Domingo received an Emmy Award for his performance as Ali in the second season of the HBO series. His role as Rue’s sponsor reveals a special bond between the pair and highlights the tumultuous nature of recovery. Domingo has worked consistently since Season 2 wrapped, even receiving an Academy Award nomination for his role in “Rustin” earlier this year. His new movie “Sing Sing,” which he executive produced and stars in, has a limited theatrical release Friday.

Angus Cloud as Fezco

Cloud played Fezco, the drug dealer with a big heart. The production team plucked Cloud off the streets to make his acting debut in the show about addiction, trauma and loss. After a heart-wrenching performance in Season 2, featuring a love connection between him and Maude Apatow’s character and the death of his on-screen brother, fans were excited to see the return of Fez, but real-life tragedy intervened.

In Sept. 2023 it was confirmed that Cloud died due to an accidental overdose, with the coroner’s report indicating several narcotics in his system. Many “Euphoria” cast mates came forward to express their condolences last fall. His final films, “The Garfield Movie” and “Abigail,” both arrived in theaters in 2024.

Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard

Maude Apatow (Credit: Amy Sussman/Getty Images)

Apatow made her debut as a series regular in the HBO series, where she plays Lexi, the younger, more level-headed sister of Cassie. Since joining the cast of “Euphoria,” Apatow has been featured in “The King of Staten Island.” She also made her off-broadway debut as Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.” The daughter of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann started her acting career playing her mother’s daughter in several movies, including “This is 40” and “Knocked Up.”

Storm Reid as Gia Bennett

Reid plays Rue’s younger sister, Gia, in the HBO series. In Season 2, Gia saw Rue’s withdrawals firsthand. The young actress is known for her role as Meg in “A Wrinkle in Time.” Since wrapping “Euphoria” Season 2, the actress featured in the films “The Suicide Squad” and “The Nun II,” TV series “Last of Us” and started studying acting at USC.

Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez

Ferreira played Kat Hernandez, a girl struggling with self-confidence and body positivity. After rumors of on-set clashes with director Sam Levinson, Ferreira announced in August 2022 that she would be exiting the show after the second season. She clarified on an episode of “Armchair Expert” that she never felt like a victim on the show but felt she couldn’t leave without publicly addressing it – “don’t believe everything you read,” she stressed on the podcast.

Eric Dane as Cal Jacobs

Eric Dane (Credit: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic)

Cal Jacobs is the father of football star Nate. In the first episode of the series, Cal meets up with the trans teenager Jules for an affair at a motel. Throughout the series, his issues become reflected in his son. Dane, known for his role as McSteamy in “Grey’s Anatomy,” has starred in “Redeeming Love” and the recently released “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” since the show last wrapped.

Dominic Fike as Elliot

Fike joined the cast in Season 2, playing Elliot, the love interest of both Jules and Rue. He has opened up in the past about the difficulties of joining the drug-centered show as a drug addict himself. He told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that Levinson got him a sober coach to be on standby while shooting, but he said it “did not work.” The “3 Nights” singer has continued his music career since wrapping the show. His music has been included in “Barbie” and Sweeney’s “Anyone But You.”

Nika King as Leslie Bennett

Nika King (Credit: Nykieria Chaney/Getty Images)

King plays Rue and Gia’s mother, Leslie, in the drama series. Leslie struggles to take care of a version of her daughter she hardly knows, leaning on Ali (Domingo) for strength and guidance. The actress recently executive produced and starred in “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot.”

Javon “Wanna” Walton as Ashtray

Javon Walton (Credit: Kayla Oaddams/WireImage)

Walton played Ashtray, the younger brother of loveable drug dealer Fez (Cloud). In the finale of Season 2, Ashtray opens fire as a SWAT team storms the drug den, accidentally shooting his brother. The cops then kill Ashtray in the crossfire, leaving the show on a major cliffhanger. It is unclear whether Walton may return to the show in another capacity. Walton has gone on to star in the film “Samaritan,” the Hulu miniseries “Under the Bridge” and Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.” He also voiced Pugsley Addams in “The Addams Family 2.”

Austin Abrams as Ethan Lewis

Abrams plays Ethan, Kat’s internet boyfriend and the lead of Lexi’s play in Season 2. The actor is known for his roles in “Dash & Lily” and “This Is Us.” Since the release of the second season, Abrams has starred in Netflix’s “Do Revenge,” among other projects. The trajectory of his character is unclear after Ferreira’s exit from the show.

On Friday, Bill Maher followed up on his New York Times editorial calling for Joe Biden to drop out with a “New Rules” bit ranking some of Biden’s potential replacements, should POTUS take the “Real Time” host’s advice.

Maher picked four of the younger Democrats waiting on the bench for the elderly party leaders to retire — Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

All of them had strengths and weaknesses, though Maher clearly favored two of them — but the main thing, he argued, is that whatever is going to happen needs to happen fast. Or, as he put it when he kicked off the segment, “new rule: Stop f—ing around.”

Marher argued that the issue isn’t who will replace Biden, “because he is not going to be the Democrats candidate for president in 2024, all due respect.” The issue, Maher said, is that “the one thing I know for sure about America is this: It’s run by mean girls” who will keep picking Biden apart until the campaign is destroyed, and so he’s “toast.”

But the HBO host asserted that the spectacle of Biden stepping down as the Democratic Party’s nominee and being replaced on the ticket this close to the election isn’t necessarily as scary as it sounds. “Replacing a president as his party’s candidate this late will seem like a big deal for about three days, and then we’ll all be over it. It’ll be like when a coworker gets her tits done.”

“At first, it’s oh my god, and a week later, they’re just her tits. America is going to do this. We’re going to get new tits,” Maher declared, teeing up his evaluation of the possible replacements.

“Kamala Harris, Vice President, will get all of Biden’s campaign money and on the Democrats’ best issue, abortion, she’s a walking reminder to women that Republicans are coming for the abortion pill. She won’t just protect Plan B. She is Plan B,” Maher joked.

He also argued that as a former prosecutor, she has massive strengths in the current climate, and that’s on top of the fact that if elected, she “would be the first woman president, first black woman president, and first Asian president.”

“But,” he cautioned, “I don’t vote for who will be the first. I vote for who will win, and for whatever reason, Harris has never been popular. You can count the number of delegates she won in the 2020 primaries on one hand, as long as that hand has no fingers. In three years as Vice President, she’s been quieter than an electric car, and like an electric car, your MAGA uncle can’t explain why she fills him with homicidal rage. She just does.”

“Sometimes life isn’t fair. It’s not fair that she’s not popular. She’s intelligent and accomplished,” he added, before joking about how the one thing she was put in charge of — the border — hasn’t worked out.

Then he turned his attention to Newsom, who he called “The only governor, with the possible exception of Kristi Noem, who looks like they could do porn.”

Listing Newsom’s conventional, physically attractive attributes, Maher also dinged him for his apparent ambitions. “I don’t want to say he really, really wants to be the guy who steps in if the current nominee goes down, but he gets an alert on his phone every time Biden can’t think of a word.”

Maher also noted that being the governor of California comes with some negatives, including the risk he’d be blamed for the homelessness problem, but he had a solution. “There’s a response to that: ‘The homeless can live anywhere but they choose California. Nine out of ten machete wielding meth addicts say they wouldn’t be unhoused anywhere else.”

But Maher praised Newsom as “the best communicator in the party, with a history of standing up to bullies, and his name lends itself to the best slogan since “I like Ike: ‘I’m having Gavin.'”

Next up, Whitmer, who Maher joked “is a very attractive choice: High profile female governor who owns dogs but doesn’t shoot them,” a dig at Noem. Maher had pretty much nothing but positive things to say about her as a politician and as a leader, noting her various victories and concluding, “voters who don’t yet know her will say she already was president because of all the TV shows where the President was played by an actress who looks just like Gretchen Whitmer.”

Finally he reached Buttigieg, who he also considered “impressive” for his military record, his political successes and academic and professional achievements. “And he’s only 10 years old,” Maher joked. “He’s perfect for the moment, because, as our transportation secretary, Pete has experience cleaning up train wrecks, and he has the balls to come on Fox News, although it’s no secret that he brings something that makes Fox conservatives very uncomfortable: Facts.”

Ultimately, Maher argued, “we need some new characters on this sitcom we call the country. Americans like new and these guys, all you need to know is they’re moderates. They’re under 100 years old and they have a D next to their name.”

“Sure, it would be fun and probably a winner if Michelle Obama ran, but she’s off living her best life. We’re not going to get a superstar. We’re not going to get a superstar in this draft. We’re at the airport, and at this point, we just need to be sure we get the last rental car. Something reasonably safe, relatively clean and not Trump. If there isn’t a dead Girl Scout in the trunk, we’re good to go,” Maher concluded.

In its update Friday on the state of talks with Studios, Teamsters Local 399 and the Basic Crafts said they’re still “far apart on our core priorities” ahead of the final week of negotiations.

“The Hollywood Basic Crafts have just concluded their 4th week of negotiations with the AMPTP. After (4) weeks, we still remain far apart on our core priorities prior to entering our final week of negotiations to take place next week,” the memo reads. “We have been extremely clear on the reasonableness of what we have brought to the table. Many of our proposals would cost the employers very little, and in some cases no money, but would be huge wins for our members.”

Negotiations with the studios for Hollywood Basic Crafts, Local 399 Black Book, and Location Manager Agreement are scheduled to end a week from today on July 19th. In the Friday night update, the groups said they’re open to continuing negotiations beyond that date if necessary. However, the memo made clear, there will be no extension beyond July 31m when the current agreement expires.

In addition, on Sunday Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien will participate in a member call with Motion Picture Division Lindsay Dougherty.

This call will provide an important state of our negotiations and how Teamsters remain united from coast-to-coast throughout our division,” the memo said. “Our commitment to fight on behalf of the core priorities our members have provided should not be underestimated. Our members are some of the lowest paid in production. If the employers want to talk about how much the Teamsters cost, we will continue to remind them how much Teamsters and the Hollywood Basic Crafts are worth.”

Congratulations to all of the winners.”

Additionally, the organization named the late Andre Braugher as this year’s Career Achievement recipient and “Twin Peaks” as the recipient of the Heritage Award. The Career Achievement Honoree is bestowed on the actors, directors and creatives who have made a lasting impact both on Hollywood and the TV industry. As for the Heritage Award, it recognizes remarkable series that have had an enduring significance and impact.
