Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump was shot at during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, with a bullet hitting his ear and causing visible injuries.

The Secret Service neutralized the shooter, who is now dead. One spectator was killed and two others were seriously injured.

Trump had been addressing the crowd for around five minutes when shots rang out. He seemed to grab at his right ear before he was told to duck by Secret Service agents who jumped on top of him.

Following the shots, Trump appeared to have blood on his face as he held up his fist and mouthed “Fight” at the crowd several times while being led away by his Secret Service detail. The crowd broke into a “USA” chant.

“During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on the evening of July 13th at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of investigation.”

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump said in his first statement after the incident, which he shared on Truth Social after being taken to be checked out by health professionals.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump said. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.

CNN reported that pool reporters at the rally heard “a series of loud explosions or loud bangs,” followed by Secret Service agents rushing in to protect Trump. “The Secret Service went and immediately covered President Trump. Pool heard residual bangs afterward,” a press pool report read. “Agents grabbed Trump, who was seen waving his fists in the air.”

NBC’s Dasha Burns described the moment that shots rang out. “We were in the middle of all of this as this all transpired. We were getting off of the press riser, getting to the ground level where all of the attendees are on the grass here at this venue. We heard at first what I thought might have been fireworks. I even saw a little bit of smoke — wasn’t sure what was going on.”

“My producer Bianca and I then realized this might be something more serious. We then got ourselves behind a barricade for safety. Trying to make sure our colleagues and peers around us were safe. Everyone ducked down. As you see in that video, the former president ducked down. Secret service came and protected him. People in the audience hear those who were attending — initial confusion.”

“This is not something you are expecting when you are at an event like this. We get down on the ground. We hear those continued pop, pop, pop, pop, pops. They kept going. It felt like for a long time for those of us who were here on site,” Burns concluded.

Fox News’ Chad Pergram tweeted that Pennsylvania Rep. Dan Meuser said that it appeared multiple members of the crowd may have been shot.

CBS’s Scott MacFarlane commented, “Let me be unequivocal about something. This is a security failure of epic, historic proportions, that there was some type of explosive noise.”

Biden and other politicians rush to condemn violence

Following what appeared to be an attempted assassination of the former president, politicians and other notable public figures released a flood of statements in support of Trump and decrying the violence.

“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well,” Biden said in a statement. “I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.”

Biden appeared live in front of press and cameras shortly after the statement was issued, offering further remarks.

“Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick,” the president said. “It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”

Vice President Kamala Harris shared her relief that Trump was not seriously injured and condemned the act.

“Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence,” she said.

“There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy,” former President Barack Obama wrote. “Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics.”

Former Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan delivered one of the most emotional responses, writing, “F–king unacceptable. Zero tolerance for violence of any sort. I pray the former President is ok and all attendees. I don’t give a s–t what ur politics are. The competition is at the ballot box, not with guns. Let’s pray for peace and nonviolence in America.”

However, some took the moment to go on the attack, notably far-right Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“Democrats wanted this to happen,” she wrote. “They’ve wanted Trump gone for years and they’re prepared to do anything to make that happen.”

She went on to list members of Congress who she said had cosponsored legislation to end the former president’s Secret Service protection.

“Why would they want that? You know the reason,” the representative continued. “Others may have been killed —innocent people that were there supporting President Trump and all they wanted was to Make America Great Again and they may have been murdered for it. Thank GOD Secret Service was there for Trump and everyone else at today’s rally.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, himself a former presidential candidate, issued a statement that read, “Political violence is absolutely unacceptable. I wish Donald Trump, and anyone else who may have been hurt, a speedy recovery.”

Former presidential candidate and Biden transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg said, “In this horrible moment, encouraged to hear President Trump’s team indicate that the former president is doing well. An entire nation must speak with one voice today to completely and unequivocally reject all political violence.”

Elon Musk seized the moment to endorse Trump for president. In a short post shared on X that included video of Trump from after the shooting, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”

“Reports of the shooting in Pennsylvania are horrifying,” Rep. Liz Cheney wrote. “Violence of any kind has no place in American politics. We are grateful for the reaction of Secret Service and other law enforcement and pray for the former president and all those injured.”

Meghan McCain wrote, “Please join me and my family in immediately praying for our great nation and the entire Trump family.”

Alec Baldwin wrote on Instagram Saturday, “There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now,” following the surprise dismissal of his manslaughter trial on Friday. He added, “To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.”

Baldwin was on trial for his role firing a gun and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021 while filming western film”Rust,” which he starred in and was a producer on. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer granted the defense’s request for a dismissal after it emerged that authorities and prosecutors deliberately withheld evidence in the case, with the mystery of how real bullets got into Baldwin’s gun still remaining.

“The state’s discovery violation has injected a needless incurable delay into the jury trial. Dismissal with prejudice is warranted to ensure the integrity of the judicial system and the efficient administration of justice,” the judge said.

Though Baldwin has been cleared criminally, he still faces civil lawsuits pertaining to Hutchins’ death. Hutchins was killed when the prop gun Baldwin was using discharged and fired a live round during rehearsals.

Attorney Gloria Allred and Hutchins’ family have pledged to continue to fight Baldwin in New Mexico’s civil courts. Allred, who represents Hutchins’ parents Olga Solovey and Anatolii Androsovych and her sister Svetlana Zemko, described Judge Sommer’s decision as a “devastating blow” to all three.

“It does not change the fact that Alec Baldwin killed Halyna Hutchins on the set of ‘Rust.’ It does not change the fact that he fired a loaded gun while pointing it at a human being,” Allred explained.

Baldwin should also “just have the human decency to say ‘I’m sorry’ in a phone call or Facetime to the parents … It’s not all about Alec Baldwin. There are victims in this case. They are not celebrities — they matter,” Allred said.

Following the dismissal, Brian J. Panish, attorney for Hutchins’ husband Matthew Hutchins, said, “We respect the court’s decision. We look forward to presenting all the evidence to a jury and holding Mr. Baldwin accountable for his actions in the senseless death of Halyna Hutchins.”

Producers on “Rust,” including Baldwin, were criticized for replacing workers with non-union members while filming. Had the film’s team been made up of unionized members, they would have been required to follow the Actors’ Equity Association’s rules and safety tips for using firearms in productions.

The rules include advice that actors should “Treat all guns as if they are loaded and deadly” and that “The property master or armorer should carefully train you in the safe use of any firearm you must handle. Be honest if you have no knowledge about guns. Do not overstate your qualifications.” It is unclear if Baldwin had any prior training or if he was offered training on set.

“Never point a firearm at anyone including yourself,” the tips also state. “Always cheat the shot by aiming to the right or left of the target character. If asked to point and shoot directly at a living target, consult with the property master or armorer for the prescribed safety procedures.”

Baldwin faced up to 18 months in prison if he had been convicted.

NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell Debunks Speculation Biden Gets White House Reporters’ Questions in Advance https://www.thewrap.com/white-house-biden-questions-advance/ https://www.thewrap.com/white-house-biden-questions-advance/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:53:53 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7580099 But his staff do use their knowledge of reporters to prep him with what might be asked, the Correspondents’ Association president explains

]]>
While President Joe Biden has faced speculation, particularly from conservatives, that reporters give him their questions in advance, the White House Correspondents’ Association’s president Kelly O’Donnell took to social media Saturday to help debunk the notion following Biden’s Thursday press conference, his first solo press conference of the year. She noted that Biden’s staff use what they know about reporters and their coverage areas to try to predict what may be asked, but this does not mean reporters provide questions ahead of time.

“Received many comments and questions on press conferences. Important to note that WH staff prepare for press conferences by creating lists of questions they expect could be asked for the president,” O’Donnell explained. “They look at questions asked in briefings and of staff, stories reporters are doing, and known areas of interest. It is their job to anticipate questions reporters would ask. Staff interact with reporters every day and are very familiar with reporter subject areas. That is their job. Standard. It’s their task to prepare for likely questions.”

Conservatives in particular have previously shared a viral photo from a previous press conference with Biden holding a card that included a photo of the reporter, with a question listed below. But rather than the question being provided in advance, what was written appeared to be what the White House staff believed might be asked.

O’Donnell elaborated, “I am saying that staff game out anticipated questions that they think specific reporters may use because they talk to those reporters daily, know their work and previous questions posed to the WH team. Any of us around the WH every day can anticipate what many reporters would likely ask based on their specific reporting assignments and current news issues.”

“A photo card with an anticipated question is prepared for the president to review,” O’Donnell noted, specifically replying to concern over a viral image of one of those photo cards that included a potential question for the president. “Overlooked is that question was not actually asked as written because it was staff written.”

Biden’s Thursday press conference of the year on Thursday to mixed reactions. At the end of his introduction, he commented, “I’ve been given a list of people to call on here.”

O’Donnell explained that the president “has a list of media who are credentialed in advance” and his staff are aware of who will be in the room before a press conference begins. As the president noted Thursday, he had a list of reporters to call on — which was prepared by his staff, including a variety of different media outlets representing different platforms. His staff also preps Biden with questions they believe reporters may ask, based on their knowledge of those journalists.

This was a followup to O’Donnell looking to debunk the idea that White House reporters would provide questions in advance on Thursday. She labeled the idea a “false charge.”

However, speculation about Biden getting the questions in advance wasn’t helped by recent interviews targeting the Black community, where it was revealed that the hosts were sent questions by the campaign in advance and agreed to ask those questions.

Biden appeared much stronger at the press conference than at his June debate against Donald Trump. He also reiterated that he has no plans to drop out of the presidential race.

The Writers Guild of America West has publicly censured showrunner Tim Doyle after finding him guilty of posting a racist image on Facebook last year. Doyle was charged with posting a photo on Aug. 9, 2023 in a WGAW member Facebook group that other members “perceived as a racist and offensive depiction of a lynching.”

The WGA’s trial committee found that Doyle’s post “constituted conduct prejudicial to the welfare of the Guild and unfair dealing” and the guild’s board determined that his conduct “warrants public censure.”

“Mr. Doyle was charged with engaging in conduct prejudicial to the welfare of the Guild and unfair dealing with other members in violation of Article X.A., Section 1 of the Constitution,” guild leaders wrote in a message to members on Thursday.

A representative for Doyle did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.

Doyle said last year that he was “very sorry” for the post in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m bored at the moment, and I write a lot of jokes,” he explained at the time. “I’m a comedy writer. I was brain dead in that moment, and I picked the wrong piece of clip art to go with a silly joke about killing myself after 100 days on the picket line. I Googled the words ‘cartoon man hanging from a tree’ and that’s what came up. I really think this has been a misunderstanding.”

“There’s a part of my brain that, in the spirit of creativity, I don’t always censor myself quickly enough,” he added. “My imagination didn’t take me to the place where other people would interpret from that awful drawing. Now I look at it and I get it. Again, I know that seems clueless, but my brain did not go there.”

He added that his “heart was in the right place” and that he “didn’t mean to hurt or inflame or anger anybody.”

“I just wanted to add a laugh to the pile of ruminating that we have been doing right now about the strike,” he said.

Doyle’s list of TV credits include “Rules of Engagement,” “Last Man Standing,” “Dr. Ken,” “Speechless” and “Better Off Ted.” He most recently served as showrunner and creator of the short-lived “The Goldbergs” spinoff “Schooled.”

Writer-director-actor Keith Powell (best known as Toofer on “30 Rock,” with credits also including “Shrinking,” “This Is Us” and more) served as one of the Writers Guild Facebook group’s admins and, following its posting, called it “epically horrible, racist, self-martyring, vile, clueless, out-of-touch, boneheaded, disturbing and toxic.” Others called Doyle out at the time when the post was made public.

Celebrities and fans have started reacting to the death of iconic actress Shelley Duvall, who was best known for her role in “The Shining.” She was 75.

“When I was a boy, I went to the movies to see ‘Popeye’ with Robin Williams,” actor Wendell Pierce wrote in an X post on Thursday, sharing an anecdote about the first time he got to witness Duvall play the fictional character. “A wonderfully strange movie. The moment Shelley Duvall sang ‘He’s Large,’ I fell in love with Olive Oyl. A moment I cherish to this day as a part of my innocent youth. Today Shelley Duvall died and that little boy shed a tear for Olive Oyl with a heavy heart. RIP.”

The official Twitter account for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) also responded to the news of Duvall’s death, writing: “We’re saddened to learn that actor Shelley Duvall, known for films like ‘The Shining,’ ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Nashville,’ has died at the age of 75. Duvall’s other credits included 1977 drama ‘3 Women,’ directed by Robert Altman, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA.”

A longtime friend and fan of Duvall’s also took to social media to open up about the actress’ life, impact and the relationship the two developed over the years.

“I’ve seen the news about Shelley Duvall. I’m doing OK,” close friend Sarah said in an X post. “Shelley was having difficulties with her health over the past few months and I visited with her often. I’ll always be grateful for the memories I created with her and that I was able to give her comfort and companionship.” The tweet was coupled with a photo of the pair together in a selfie.

As TheWrap previously reported, Duvall died Thursday at age 75 from diabetes complications. Duvall’s life partner Dan Gilroy confirmed the news in a statement to media. Duvall died while asleep in her Blanco, Texas, home.

Donald Trump raged against George Clooney on social media after the actor published an op-ed in the New York Times calling for Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race.

“We are not going to win in November with this president,” Clooney wrote in the essay published Wednesday. “On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate … Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024.”

On Thursday morning, Trump ranted on Truth Social about Clooney’s action, saying “fake movie actor … who never came close to making a great movie, is getting into the act.”

“He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are,” Trump continued. “What does Clooney know about anything?”

“He uses the Democrat ‘talking point’ that Biden, the WORST President in the history of the United States, has ‘saved our Democracy.'” Trump wrote. “No, Crooked Joe was the one who WEAPONIZED Law Enforcement against his political Opponent, who created the most devastating INFLATION in the history of our Country.”

“Crooked Joe Biden didn’t save our Democracy, he brought our Democracy to its knees,” Trump concluded. “Clooney should get out of politics and go back to television … Movies never really worked for him!!!”

Marjorie Taylor Greene got schooled online over the weekend for botching basic American history while celebrating July 4 on Friday. Incorrectly naming George Washington, Paul Revere and several other historical figures as signers of the Declaration of Independence in a since-flagged X post, the Georgia representative’s flub was quickly called out and mocked from social media users on both liberals and conservatives alike.

“This is the greatest community note of all time,” one X user wrote on Sunday after the post was officially flagged by X with a content note that read, “James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Aaron Burr, Paul Revere and George Washington were not signers of the Declaration of Independence.”

“Make Stupidity Embarrassing Again,” the individual added.

Taylor Greene’s initial post, which was meant to highlight the ages of those who signed the historical document, read: “The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 was 44 years old, but more than a dozen were 35 or younger.”

The congresswoman went on to write out some of the signers, including the wrong ones, like Revere, who is best known as the American Revolution hero who informed Boston residents that the British army was on there way before the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

“Thomas Jefferson: 33 John Hancock: 39 James Madison: 25 Alexander Hamilton: 21 James Monroe: 18 Aaron Burr: 20 Paul Revere: 41 George Washington: 44,” she carried on in her post, incorrectly citing five more names. It didn’t take long for Taylor Greene’s post to be swarmed by X users mocking her and throwing jabs over her lack American history knowledge in spite of being a prominent, self-identifying American patriot.

“It just keeps happening,” Aaron Blake, a senior political reporter at The Washington Post, wrote on Sunday. He coupled his post with screenshots of Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Rep. Dan Bishop and former Rep. Madison Cawthorne of them flubbing facts about the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

Rep. Jack Kimble commented underneath the post, jokingly asking Taylor Greene, “How did you forget Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan and Ronald Reagan?”

Since making the post, people have continued to respond to it. Conservative radio host Erick Erickson even questioned Taylor Greene’s intelligence.

“WTF. Are you stupid? This is embarrassing,” he wrote.

Take a look at all the trolling X users did of Taylor Greene’s post below.

And for those interested, the actual list of the 56 delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence is as follows: John Adams, Samuel Adams, Josiah Bartlett, Carter Braxton, Charles Carroll, Samuel Chase, Abraham Clark, George Clymer, William Ellery, William Floyd, Benjamin Franklin, Elbridge Gerry, Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, John Hancock, Benjamin Harrison, John Hart, Joseph Hewes, Thomas Heyward, Jr., William Hooper, Stephen Hopkins, Francis Hopkinson, Samuel Huntington, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee, Francis, Lewis, Philip Livingston, Thomas Lynch, Jr., Thomas McKean, Arthur Middleton, Lewis Morris, Robert Morris, John Morton, Thomas Nelson, Jr., William Paca, John Penn, George Read, Caesar Rodney, George Ross, Benjamin Rush, Edward Rutledge, Roger Sherman, James Smith, Richard Stockton, Thomas Stone, George Taylor, Matthew Thornton, George Walton, William Whipple, William Williams, James Wilson, John Witherspoon, Oliver Wolcott and George Wythe.

The post Rob Reiner Calls for Biden to ‘Step Down’: ‘It’s Time to Stop F–king Around’ appeared first on TheWrap.

Rob Reiner has joined the voices calling for President Joe Biden to bow out of the 2024 presidential race, following a disastrous debate performance and an interview that left viewers unconvinced Biden had what it takes to even potentially beat Donald Trump. “It’s time to stop f–king around,” the director tweeted Sunday. “If the Convicted Felon wins, we lose our Democracy. Joe Biden has effectively served US with honor, decency, and dignity. It’s time for Joe Biden to step down.”

Reiner is a longtime donor to the Democratic Party and open about his political beliefs. He’s among the highest-profile Hollywood Democrats to come out in favor of Biden’s exit from the campaign, as acclaimed showrunner Damon Lindelof also did this past week.

In a February interview with The Guardian, Reiner said, “The question at this election is: do we want to continue 249 years of self-rule and American democracy? Or do we want to turn it over to somebody like Donald Trump who has said that he wants to destroy the constitution, go after his political enemies and turn America into an autocracy?”

“We see autocracy making its move around the world. And so if we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumbles around the world,” Reiner added.

In the same interview, he revealed that when asked by the FBI if he knew any members of the Communist Party in the 1950s, his father [actor Carl Reiner] retorted, “I  probably do, but if I did I wouldn’t tell you.” His mother, actress and singer Estelle Reiner, organized a peace group against the Vietnam War.

Reiner is not the only party donor who has called for Biden to leave the race. Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings told ABC News, “Biden is unfortunately in denial about his mental state. He needs to step aside to let a vigorous Democratic leader beat Trump.”

Ahead of Biden’s interview with ABC News on Friday, former PayPal CEO Bill Harris announced he’s pledged $2 million to the new political action committee Democrats for the Next Generation, with the intent of supporting several debates among contenders for the nomination if Biden ends his campaign.

On Saturday, real estate developer Rick Caruso tweeted in response to a Los Angeles Times piece that urged Biden to leave the race, “I deeply respect Joe Biden’s lifetime of service to our country. But the argument @LATstevelopez makes in this column is the right one. In this critical time, in this vital election, stepping aside is the right and honorable thing for President Biden to do.”

Despite those calls, a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll published Saturday indicated that Biden is enjoying his strongest polling to date in key battleground states. In the new polls, Trump edged out Biden by just 2% in states that are crucial to victory in November. He leads in Michigan and Wisconsin and is within the poll’s statistical margin of error in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina.

James Cameron, Kate Winslet, Zoë Saldaña and others paid tribute to Jon Landau following his death on Saturday. Cameron, who began working with the producer after the two were introduced in the 1990s, said that while working on the first “Avatar” film they were “making up new physics as we went along” and “mastering a brand new methodology to tell stories.”

“Again Jon gave his all, and never lost faith that we were doing something extraordinary and that we would somehow prevail. In the process we not only made a film, we forged a family,” he added.

James Cameron, who worked in tandem with Landau on major projects like 1997’s “Titanic” and the “Avatar” films, delivered a lengthy statement in honor of his friend. “A great producer and a great human being has left us,” he began. “Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. He believed that a film is the ultimate human art form, and to make films you have to first be human yourself. He will be remembered as much for his vast generosity of spirit as for the movies themselves.”

The duo worked together for more than 30 years, Cameron continued, “and I never saw him downcast once. He led with a balance of humor and fierce will, and true joy in the work.”

Landau and Cameron were first introduced in 1993 when the former was “the suit” assigned to work on “True Lies.” Cameron explained, “In the midst of the logistical nightmare of that production we came to respect and enjoy each other. A bond forged in fire.” Cameron convinced Landau to leave Fox for the director’s own production company Lightstorm, and the two set about conquering blockbuster after blockbuster together.

“Jon was my right hand and I was his,” Cameron added. “In recent years we became a trapeze act… total interdependence, total trust, total synchronization. We became not only the closest of working partners, but the closest of friends.”

“Jon loved his work, and loved the people around him, the amazing team he had built,” Cameron said. “Every day was a joyful battle, against entropy — the chaos that threatens to unravel every human endeavor.”

“Titanic” star Kate Winslet told Deadline that Landau “was the kindest and best of men.” She continued, “He was a man who was rich with compassion and exceptional at supporting and nurturing teams of phenomenal creative people. His strength in life was knowing the importance of family, at home and at work. He was always full of smiles and gratitude. I can’t believe I am writing this, can’t believe he is gone.”

“Avatar” star Zoë Saldaña remembered Landau in a post shared on Instagram. She wrote, “Dear Jon, Words are hard to put together right now, your passing is hitting really hard. You are leaving us too soon, my thoughts are with you and your family right now. Your wisdom and support shaped so many of us in ways we will always be grateful for.”

“The memories we shared together will always hold a special place in my heart.
Your legacy will continue to inspire us and guide us in our journey. Rest in peace, dear Jon. You will be deeply missed.”

Landau’s sister Tina said he was the “best brother a girl could ever dream of” and tweeted, “My heart is broken but also bursting with pride and gratitude for his most extraordinary life, and the love and gifts he gave me — and all who knew him or his films.”

“Avatar” star Sam Worthington also commemorated Landau with a gentle reference to the franchise. He said in a statement, “Jon was all heart. He made everything and everyone he touched feel they could be better. He led with humor and strength, compassion and kindness. The People say all energy is borrowed and someday you have to give it back. I see you, Jon.”

The live-action adaptation of “Moana” is set to begin production in August, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed on Friday. Johnson announced the news in an Instagram post that featured Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Rena Owen as Grandma Tala. Johnson will reprise his role as Maui for the second time, having played the demigod in “Moana” and this Thanksgiving’s “Moana 2.”

“It’s our deepest honor to share the legends, songs, dances and traditions of our Polynesian culture with all of you and your families around the world,” Johnson wrote. “Production begins this August.” The live-action “Moana” is set to debut in theaters on July 10, 2026 — it was previously set for a June 2025 release.

Disney announced the cast on June 12. Laga’aia said in a statement at the time, “I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites. My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

In January, the original “Moana” Auli’i Cravalho explained why she isn’t returning to play the character in the live-action film. “It feels really important to me to pass the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, and I say that with my whole chest,” she explained.

“I have been invited, and I exist in these beautiful AAPI spaces, Asian American Pacific Islander, and I am one of the few Pacific Islanders. And I’ll say it again, I am one of the few Pacific Islanders. And our stories are so important to be told.”

“We are used. And I want to tell our own stories. I want to be behind the camera as much as I am in front of it,” Cravalho shared. “When I talk about representation, I want to see the same thing happening in writers’ rooms. I want to see the same thing happening with directors. And Taika Waititi talks about this as well, I want to see showrunners who are also of indigenous descent telling their own stories.”

She continued, “And if it has to start with me — I’m 23, but if it starts with me, so be it. I want that door to swing wide open, and I cannot wait to meet the next Moana.” Cravalho will be an executive producer on the new film.
