Maison Rabanne partners with Art Basel on an artistic development initiative

Paris-based fashion house Rabanne unveiled a partnership between Art Basel  and Rabanne Arts Factory, a new initiative aimed at supporting the next generation of digital creatives, in Art Basel earlier this month.

Chaired by Rabanne artistic director Julien Dossena and a jury comprised of international experts from the art world, The Arts Factory kicked off in January with a call for entries. The prize will offer one digital artist the chance to work with Rabanne on a project at the end of the year.

The six finalists, selected from three world-renowned art schools – Central Saint Martins in London, Ecole Duperré in Paris and Istituto Marangoni in Florence – were also announced last week. They include Buse Simon, U.K.; Alice Bucknell, USA; Elizabeth O’Brien, U.K.; Lorenzo Risani, Italy; Lucy Ellis, U.K., and Lola Moniz, France.

Founded in 1966 by Spanish fashion designer Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo (commonly known under the pseudonym Paco Rabannethe), the brand became known for its avant-garde vision and radical approach to the craft, including the use of metal mesh and other unconventional materials to create kinetic silhouettes. The designs were worn by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and Audrey Hepburn.

Art has always been an integral part of the brand, and since the appointment of Dossena in 2013, the house has collaborated with established talents like Marie-Amelie Sauvé, Marc Ascoli and Peter Saville.

“Art has always been at the heart of the Rabanne DNA,” Rabanne CBO Vincent Thilloy said. “This project builds on that legacy by celebrating and empowering a new way of creating imagery in the digital space. In doing so, it will both pay homage to and reinvent the brand’s heritage.”

The final winner, announced this fall, will receive support at different stages of their creative career through a global approach that includes mentoring with Rabanne executives, visibility, image creation and financial support for the creation of their work. They will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work at Art Basel Miami in December.

Brazilian fashion brand Farm Rio opens in West Hollywood

Global fashion and lifestyle brand Farm Rio opened a new store at the crossroads of Melrose Avenue and Westmount Drive in West Hollywood. The 1,690-square-foot location will showcase Farm Rio’s latest collections and collaborations.

The Brazilian brand, known for its vibrant prints, staged several pop-ups throughout Los Angeles before opening its first California store in Venice in 2022. Now, with the opening of the Melrose store, Farm Rio celebrates its fourth store in the U.S. and second in California.

With a dedication to artistry and sustainability, the new space celebrates Brazilian culture and craftsmanship by collaborating with talented artists Alê Sisdelli and Dominique Jardy for interior architecture.

The Buriti fitting room is one of the store’s highlights, designed and crafted by Sisdelli, made by sustainably sourced Buriti straw, a type of palm tree deeply rooted in Brazilian culture. Known as the “tree of life” in indigenous communities, the Buriti is also the natural habitat for various bird and insect species.

The store additionally features watercolor wallpaper hand-painted by Jardy, capturing the beauty of Brazilian landscapes, plants and animals with a romantic and poetic touch. The French artist’s work adds an extra layer of elegance and charm to the store, inviting customers to immerse themselves in the essence of Brazil.

Rihanna launches Fenty Hair with Hollywood fête

It was a big week for Rihanna in the world of beauty. In addition to becoming the new muse of J’Adore by Parfums Christian Dior, the billionaire entertainer and entrepreneur celebrated the launch of her debut haircare brand, Fenty Hair, in Hollywood on June 10.

The Fenty Hair collection is comprised of one shampoo, two conditioners, one treatment, four stylers and one tool. The products were developed and tested with all hair types and textures in mind on collaboration with in-house global stylists and a team of research and development experts and chemists.

“Hair has always been very personal to me—my hairstyles have been markers of my evolution and growth over the years—so launching Fenty Hair was something I was really passionate about,” Rihanna, who launched Fenty Beauty almost seven years ago, said. “Creating products that were easy to use, no matter your hair type or texture, and that included repair in every step and could keep up with me, was crucial.”

Meanwhile, Rihanna’s new Dior perfume campaign will be created with longtime friend Steven Klein and revealed Sept. 1.

Michael Kors toasts his new Rodeo Drive store with a starry dinner

Michael Kors came to town June 4 to celebrate the opening of a new Michael Kors Collection store in Beverly Hills.

The brand fêted the occasion on a glamorous Tuesday evening that combined the best of Los Angeles. Guests including Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwayne Wade, Kaitlyn Dever, Olivia Wilde, Kerry Washington, Mindy Kaling and Marisa Tomei joined the designer at Canter’s Deli, which had been taken over by Spago for one night only.

“Beverly Hills is one of the few places in the world where you can get the speed of big-city life blended with a resort-like glamour,” Kors said. “From the impressive architecture to the restaurants, world-class people-watching and the shopping, it has the best of everything. I am very excited to bring Michael Kors Collection back to one of the most legendary locations on the planet. Rodeo Drive is a very special place for me personally, as my family moved to Beverly Hills back in the ’70s and the street has always been an epicenter of luxury and glamour.”

The new 1,500-square-foot Michael Kors Collection store features a minimalistic storefront with a wide, open glass window entrance offering maximum visibility from the street and enveloping the store in the warm California natural light. The interior incorporates a mix of materials and textures, ranging from blackened steel and raw concrete to antique brass, gold calacatta marble, oxidized maple and luxe textiles in a simple palette of grey, white, black and brass.

Michael Kors Collection is open now at 242 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, 90210.

Nahmias stages its SS25 “Physical Education” show at the Pan Pacific Recreation Center

Los Angeles-based, luxury brand Nahmias presented its Spring/Summer 2025 menswear collection at the Pan Pacific Park Recreation Center in Los Angeles June 9.

The Sunday show, which included a special performance by Machine Gun Kelly, marked a return to the brand’s hometown after several seasons on the Paris Men’s calendar.

Founder and creative director Doni Nahmias drew inspiration from his troubled formative years for the SS25 “Physical Education” collection, transforming youthful memories into a vibrant narrative of evolution and perseverance.

The collection was a mix of gritty, grunge-inspired street and sportswear, alongside classic workwear and contemporary athletic apparel.

Custom prints, featuring floral patterns and real pressed California flowers, were incorporated into denim pieces including five-pocket jeans and boxer briefs. Italian denim was also treated with special techniques, including foil applications to resemble oil spills from the oil rigs off the California coast and jeans that appeared stained and destroyed by long days spent skating until sunset.

Classic sportswear silhouettes were reimagined in knitwear, while perforated leather suiting and tailoring offered a reinterpretation of mesh sportswear and uniforms.

The show also introduced Nahmias’ newest sneaker, the Ollies, slated for release this fall, and the brand’s first foray into eyewear.

Founded in 2018 and inspired by Doni’s hometown of Summerland, Nahmias’ signature aesthetic is a mix of skate, basketball, surf and hip-hop codes. To date, the brand has released six seasonal collections and collaborated on special projects with retailers like Maxfield, Harrods, The Webster and Patron of the New.

Fans include Justin Bieber; Jack Harlow; Lewis Hamilton; Olympian fencer Miles Chamley-Watson, who walked in the show; and British Premier League soccer player Reece James, who played the role of janitor, mopping down the court after the presentation.

This year’s participants included Deborah Kass, Erick and Elliot Jiménez, Glenn Ligon, Jenny Holzer, Joiri Minaya, José Parlá, Juliana Huxtable, Maia Cruz Palileo, Paul Anthony Smith and Tourmaline. Curator Racquel Chevremont again led the selection of artists and their work.

On June 7, the brand also hosted Championing the Next Generation, a Through Her Lens conversation moderated by Perri Peltz at the Crosby Street Hotel with award-winning women in film and program advisors Kerry Washington, Patty Jenkins and Laura Karpman.

Founded in 2015 by Tribeca and Chanel, Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program, provides ongoing support and mentorship to the next generation of emerging U.S.-based self-identifying women and nonbinary writers and directors.

Since 2015, 40 short films have been developed in the mentorship program and eight have won, their filmmaking teams receiving full funding to complete the projects. Winning films have premiered at top-tier festivals, including TIFF and Sundance, and have been distributed by Max, Searchlight, Criterion and more.

Seven out of the eight winning filmmakers are women of color, and nearly 70% of all participants are women or nonbinary people of color. Alumni of the program have gone on to direct critically acclaimed projects, including A.V. Rockwell’s “A Thousand and One,” Numa Perrier’s “The Perfect Find” and Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny.”

Marni taps artist Alake Shilling for the High Summer 2024 collection

The new California-inspired Marni High Summer collection – a Marni Jam as envisioned by Paloma Elesesser, Alake Shilling and Francesco Risso – landed in West Hollywood earlier this month.

Conceived as a bodacious wardrobe for sunny days, complete with bags and accessories, the new installment of Marni Jam, the interdisciplinary multi-practice that joins Marni and like-minded entities into a series of creative exchanges, is an ode to the bond between human bodies and the body of nature.

Los Angeles born artist Alake Shilling’s soft, vibrant flora and fauna adorn many of the collection’s pieces. Marni’s unique sense of playfulness is apparent through cut-outs, flounces and see-through crochet and a palette of white, sand, pale yellow and cocoa with bright notes of leaf green, sunny yellow and sky blue.

Organic and lower-impact materials were also used throughout the collection. The campaign was captured on the streets of L.A. by photographer Colin Dodgson.

Known for her colorful paintings and sculptures of imagined creatures and whimsical landscapes, Shilling has always taken inspiration from childhood in her artistic practice, in which she combines pop culture, cartoon and the funk aesthetic to create different worlds for her unique characters to explore and bring joy and adventure to mundane life.

On June 6, friends of the house – including Shilling, Benny Blanco, Jeremy Zucker, Drumaq, Cara Santana, Brittany Byrd, Kohshin Finley, Sami Miro and Courtney Trop – celebrated the new drop at the Marni Boutique on Melrose Place.

The collection is available now globally in Marni boutiques, select retailers and at marni.com

U Beauty debut their first collaboration with Tinx

Luxury skincare brand U Beauty has launched their first-ever collaboration with influencer, New York Times bestselling author and podcast host Tinx (birth name Christina Najjar).

The U Beauty x Tinx Plasma Lip Compound in Rom Com was inspired by Tinx’s romantic (mis)adventures, lifelong affinity for romantic comedies and her admitted obsession with having juicy-soft lips.

“Rom Com is the perfect universally flattering pink that’s kind of girly but not too sweet,” Tinx, a longtime fan of the brand, said. “I wanted to make a color that just looks good on everybody – like your lips but better. And makes you want to make out with someone.”

Drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean and allure of pristine beaches, a pop-up boutique enveloped in a toile de Jouy display of the sun, trees and sculptures of lions, giraffes, monkeys and tigers made from shells overlooks the pool. Inside visitors can shop the new 2024 Dioriviera capsule collection designed by Grazia Chiuri, along with menswear.

Dior also took over the hotel spa for a summer residency. Dressed in the same coral Toile de Jouy Soleil, the Dior Spa offers a tailor-made program that includes six signature treatments for the face and body, each designed to help the skin and senses blossom at the height of summer. A selection of Dior’s skincare and fragrance collections are also available for purchase within the spa’s boutique, including L’Or de Vie, Dior Prestige, and La Collection Privée Christian Dior.

The pop-up is open through Sept. 2.

Lele Sadoughi debuts an Impressionist-inspired accessories collection

Accessories brand Lele Sadoughi joined forces with The Metropolitan Museum of Art to release a 33-piece collection of hair accessories, jewelry, handbags and more.

Marking Lele Sadoughi’s first collaboration in the arts, the collection was inspired by renowned works within the encyclopedic art museum. The introductory range, called the Masterpiece Collection (Volume 1), includes references to Gustav Klimt and Pierre-Auguste Renoir and features designs inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s “Wheat Field With Cypresses,” Edgar Degas’ “The Dance Class” and Claude Monet’s “Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies,” among others.

“Working alongside The Metropolitan Museum of Art for our inaugural Met x Lele Sadoughi collaboration has truly been an honor,” Lisa “Lele” Sadoughi, founder and chief creative officer, said.

“I always find myself wandering into the galleries that house the 19th century European paintings,” Sadoughi continued. “I feel honored to have had the opportunity to interpret masterpieces into wearable, three-dimensional art. From hand-enameled, sculptural water lily earrings, to hand-sewn silk floral belts and bags and screen-printed headbands with still life images, famed ballerinas and skylines with hand-sewn pearl cloud formations and clusters of crystals, I believe we have created our most collectible collection to date.”

“Collaborations are most successful when they are supported by a personal connection to art in the Museum, and The Met x Lele Sadoughi epitomizes that,” Josh Romm, head of global licensing and partnerships at The Met, said. “Her attention-grabbing designs are sure to spark conversation about 5,000 years of art and we look forward to exploring works across The Met’s 19 curatorial departments for future collections.”

Founded by Sadoughi in 2012 in New York City, Lele Sadoughi’s pieces have been worn by Kate Middleton, Oprah Winfrey, Olivia Rodrigo and Zendaya.  The brand previously collaborated with the likes of J. Crew, Lilly Pulitzer, SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker and Swarovski, as well as iconic franchises such as National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Lisa Frank and Barbie. Lele Sadoughi can be found at its flagship stores in Dallas, Houston, Nashville, New York City and Newport Beach, as well as hundreds of leading retailers worldwide. She opened a flagship store in Newport Beach in 2022.

The Met x Lele Sadoughi collaboration, which ranges in price from $55 to $200 and includes select styles for kids, is available at lelesadoughi.com and in Lele Sadoughi stores. Hair accessories will also be available for purchase at The Met Store and online at store.metmuseum.org.

Anne Hathaway’s viral Gap red carpet gown is now available online

Gap has created a limited edition version of the custom white shirtdress that actress Anne Hathaway wore to the Bulgari Aeterna High Jewellry event in Rome earlier this month.

Designed by Gap Inc.’s creative director Zac Posen, The Poplin White Shirtdress is a reinvented take on Gap’s iconic white shirt made from 100% organic cotton.

“Designing this custom white shirt dress was an exciting opportunity to reimagine Gap’s classic white shirt,” Posen, who joined the company in February, said. “By incorporating elements like the shirt’s collar and placket, and adding feminine touches with darting at the waist, we created a modern look that pays homage to the elegance of Audrey Hepburn in ‘Roman Holiday.’ It’s a connection of timeless style with contemporary fashion.”

After decades as one of the most beloved retailers in the U.S. and an emblem of American fashion and style, Gap has been struggling for years. Posen was appointed EVP and creative director of Gap Inc. (overseeing design across Gap, Banana Republic, Athleta and Old Navy) with the hope that he can  “reinvigorate” the brands and turn the business around.

Posen made his Gap red carpet debut in April with another custom red carpet gown (this time in denim) designed for Da’Vine Joy Randolph at the Met Gala. “I’m proud to represent Gap Inc.on a world stage like the Met Gala, where fashion meets entertainment to shape the cultural conversation,” he said in a statement.

The Poplin White Shirtdress is available for presale now exclusively online at Gap.com in sizes 00-16 and retails for $158. Orders will begin shipping in July.

“Mickalene Thomas: All About Love” opens at The Broad

A new touring special exhibition “Mickalene Thomas: All About Love,” has opened at The Broad in downtown Los Angeles. Running through Sept. 29, this is the first major international tour of the pioneering artist’s work.

Co-organized by the Hayward Gallery, London, and The Broad, Los Angeles in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, the exhibit includes over 80 works made by the artist over the last 20 years and highlights how Thomas mastered and innovated within several disciplines, from mixed-media painting and collage to installation and photography. The exhibition shares its title and several of its themes with the pivotal text by feminist author Bell Hooks, in which love is an active process rooted in healing, carving a path away from domination and towards collective liberation.

“Mickalene Thomas’ visionary artistic practice presents an unapologetic focus on Black female representation, amplifying portraiture’s capacity to capture authentic lived experience and relationships,” Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad, said. “Thomas’ work, while pushing conventional boundaries of technique and material, touches all aspects of culture and society, from notions of beauty to sexuality and politics, powerfully bringing visibility to those who have historically been excluded and marginalized in art history.”

The themes of the exhibition extend into a full slate of associated programming developed in collaboration with the artist, including a summer concert series and in-gallery programs centering women and Black and queer communities.

Toteme opens a West Hollywood flagship

Swedish fashion house Toteme opened a 2,600-square-foot standalone flagship store on Melrose Avenue in the former Benjamin Salon space.

Designed in partnership with the Swedish design studio Halleroed, the new location is the most comprehensive remodeling of a retail space the brand has undertaken and blends local modernist and Art Deco references with elemental materials and geometric shapes that subtly recall the brand’s signature monogram.

“The Melrose Avenue store is rooted in our Swedish heritage, but also captures the airiness and sense of freedom that California’s broad landscapes and architectural history inspire,” cofounder Karl Lindman said. “This is the first time we’ve had the chance to remodel a retail space from scratch, and we wanted to give it a distinct and distinguished character that paid tribute to downtown Los Angeles’ Art Deco past, as though the building was always here.”

Founded in 2014 by Lindman and Elin Kling in Stockholm, Toteme offers women’s ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, accessories and jewelry. They opened their first West Coast store in Palisades Village last November.

Toteme is open now at 8910 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 90069.

To mark the 100th anniversary of its iconic Meisterstück writing instrument, Montblanc opened a Chalet Pop-Up on Rodeo Drive.

With its black “cigar” shape, gold fittings and handcrafted nib, the Meisterstück has become synonymous with Montblanc and a global symbol of writing culture since its 1924 introduction.

The pop-up features collections specially created for the centennial, including the Meisterstück The Origin Collection that revisits original concepts from the Montblanc archive, and the Meisterstück Leather Collection.

There is also a café serving treats and beverages, a movie area and DJ performances. Plus, in Anderson’s signature style, store porters will be on hand to help guests navigate the chalet and make the most of their visit.

The new store, located next to Anine Bing’s boutique, features Martin’s signature Fiore dresses, along with new menswear, kidswear and NM Home, which includes ceramics, linens and wallpaper. There is also an eclectic mix of vintage and artisan-made home goods, art and fine jewelry on offer.

David Zwirner celebrates 30 years with a special exhibition in Los Angeles

David Zwirner is marking its 30th anniversary with the opening of their new flagship Los Angeles gallery and an exhibition featuring works by all of the gallery’s artists.

Opening to the public on Thursday, the exhibition will present new paintings, sculptures and installations made specifically for the expansive show alongside recent and historic works.

Titled “David Zwirner: 30 Years,” the exhibition will feature new works by artists who have been with the gallery since the beginning, including Luc Tuymans and Stan Douglas, and artists who have recently joined the gallery like Elizabeth Peyton, Michael Armitage and Emma McIntyre.

“David Zwirner: 30 Years” will inaugurate the gallery’s new building at 606 North Western Ave. in Melrose Hill, designed by Selldorf Architects, and will span the adjacent David Zwirner spaces at 612 and 616 North Western Ave., which opened to the public in May 2023.

The newly constructed three-story gallery has over 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, an outdoor terrace with views of the Hollywood Sign to the north, and a concrete staircase linking the first and second floors reminiscent of the stairs at David Zwirner’s 20th Street gallery in New York City. The three adjacent gallery spaces on Western Avenue are all unified with white facades, and the parking area and roofs are designed to give the outdoor spaces an abundant amount of greenery.

“To mark the gallery’s 30th anniversary and to inaugurate the completion of our new Los Angeles building, we are excited to present a very special exhibition that celebrates the artists who have shaped the gallery’s program since its founding,” Zwirner said. “Many of our artists will be in L.A. for this happy occasion, as we toast to 30 years of exhibitions, books, spaces and projects, and look forward to all that is to come.”

Tiffany & Co. launches the “Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams” collection

LVMH-owned American luxury jewelry brand Tiffany & Co. debuted the “Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams” collection on May 2.

For the collection, the Louis Vuitton Men’s creative director took inspiration from Ancient Greek god of the sea Poseidon’s mythical trident.

“We are excited to unveil Pharrell’s inaugural collection for Tiffany. The “Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams” collection defies the conventions of fine jewelry design. It represents a balance of Pharrell’s creative vision with Tiffany & Co.’s inventive craftsmanship,” Alexandre Arnault, Tiffany & Co.’s EVP of product, communications and industrial, said. “Each piece embodies Pharrell’s distinct style and unique point of view.”

Adopting the structure of the trident, the “Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams” collection incorporates sharp, spear-like spikes within an array of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings embodying a sense of punk spirit. Offered in 18-carat yellow gold or titanium with all metal and diamond iterations, each piece challenges conventional methods in their design.

“I’m very inspired by the water, and the name of this collection, Titan, draws inspiration from Poseidon, ruler of the sea, King of Atlantis,” Williams said. “Atlantis is also the name of the community I grew up in Virginia Beach. The detail in all of the jewelry pieces is very intentional, the use of black titanium … It’s a physical manifestation of beauty in blackness.”

“Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams” is available now nationwide exclusively on Tiffany.com and at The Landmark in New York City.

The collection will be available globally at Tiffany & Co. stores in June.

The event also celebrated Anine Bing’s Summer Collection, featuring its iconic global face, Kate Moss. A celebration of the brand’s heritage and its rock ‘n’ roll approach to timeless wardrobe staples, the new collection also drew inspiration from its Los Angeles roots and deep connection to music.

Augustinus Bader announces a Sofia Coppola collaboration

Premium skin and haircare line Augustinus Bader released a collaboration with filmmaker Sofia Coppola., the “Augustinus Bader x Sofia Coppola” collection, which reimagines the brand’s lip balm in three tinted shades.

“The Bader lip balm is one of my favorites, so I was excited when the brand agreed to collaborate on a tinted version,” Coppola said. “Shade 1 is based on a favorite sheer deep pink lipstick I hoarded after it was discontinued, that’s easy and adds a brightening, subtle tint. Shade 2 is a red coral I like for summer or at the beach. And Shade 3 is a burnt, earthy plum.”

Formulated with a hydrating blend of plant-based butters and oils, including shea butter, vitamin E and candelilla wax, and powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8® technology, the tinted balm enhances lips with a sheer wash of color that builds with each application, while also nourishing, plumping and renewing for softer, smoother, healthier lips.

Launched in 2018, the line of skin, body and haircare products is inspired by over 30 years of groundbreaking research led by stem cell scientist and doctor of regenerative medicine, Professor Augustinus Bader. The brand also has collaborations with designers Victoria Beckham and Haider Ackermann.

The first Monday in May means the stars were out for the 2024 Met Gala. The theme was “The Garden of Time” in support of the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Anna Wintour invited Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny to be this year’s cochairs for the Costume Institute Benefit in New York City.

Other notable names in attendance included Rebecca Ferguson, Colman Domingo, Ayo Edebiri, Greta Gerwig, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Steven Yeun, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gigi Hadid, Keke Palmer, Donald Glover, Greta Lee, Demi Moore, Lil Nas X, Matthew Macfadyen, Kylie Minogue, Penélope Cruz, Brie Larson, Dua Lipa, Cardi B, Sabrina Carpenter, Shakira, Michelle Yeoh, Lily Gladstone and Matt Damon, among many others.

Plus, with TikTok as an official sponsor alongside Loewe, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see more social media influence than ever on the red carpet, regardless of the $75,000 tickets.

Check out who took the dress code literally and who approached the fashion assignment as more of a metaphor, in TheWrap’s photo gallery of the 2024 Met Gala’s red carpet below.
