History of Lansdowne Road Stadium
Built-in 1872, the Aviva Stadium is the oldest Rugby Union grounds worldwide and the oldest sports stadium in Europe. Originally called ‘Lansdowne Road’, the creation of the stadium was inspired by a vision of a young athlete, Henry William Dunlop who organised the first All-Ireland Athletic Championships.
It has since then become an amazing sports venue as well as a concert and event venue. It has fantastic tour packages available for groups of all sizes. They usually run 7 days a week but are closed when the Aviva Stadium is in use.
Directions From Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge To Aviva Stadium
Walking – 15 minutes
- Leaving Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge, turn right on Simmonscourt Road
- Take the first left on Merrior Road
- Walk for about 200 meters on Merrion Road and take the second on the right, Serpentine Avenue
- Walk for about 500 meters on Serpentine Road, until Railway Cottages junction where you take the left
- Walk on Railway Cottages until you reach Aviva Stadium
By Train (DART) – 8 minutes
- Leaving Clayton Hotel Ballsbridge, turn right on Simmonscourt Road
- On Merrion Road turn right slightly and take the first on the Left (Sandymount Avenue) which is almost in front of you
- Walk straight until Sandymount train station
- Take the train direction North until Lansdowne Road (first stop)
- Aviva Stadium will be right next to you
